The Alma Tierra Roots

Alma Tierra was created as a partnership between Tom Savage and Jeff Hinderscheid as a tribute to the beautiful history of the landscape and agricultural connection to the land in South Monterey County.

The purchase of the beautiful and newly renovated Vanderhurst Commons at 209 South Vanderhurst Avenue in King City paves the way for a community based rental space that honors both the history of the area, and the diverse population surrounding the location.

The vision for Alma Tierra and the Vanderhurst Commons combines the artistic love of the land it sits on with the drive to engage all community members in a location fit for any occasion.

We look forward to seeing you there, as we continue to strive to do what we love, and bring it home.

Thomas Savage was born and raised in Southern California. He grew up in West Covina and attended Bosco Tech HS in Rosemead, California. Following high school, Tom attended Whitter College in Whittier, California where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Economics. Tom then attended the University of San Diego in San Diego, California where he earned a Master of Business Administration.

After graduate school, Tom worked for three years as a management consultant in Irvine, California. Seeking greater fulfilment, Tom was then commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States
Marine Corps. Tom served 25 years in the Corps as a helicopter pilot. He was stationed throughout the United States and overseas and did two combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan.

While in the service, Tom earned a Master of Military Studies from the United States Marine Corps Command and Staff College and a Masters of National Security and Strategic Studies from the United States Naval War College, both with distinction.

In 2025, Tom retired from the Marine Corps as a Colonel. He and his family moved to King City, California. Prior to retirement, Tom founded SIGS Company LLC, an agricultural supply and
manufacturing representation company. Tom and his family continue to enjoy and thrive in King City, California.

When Tom moved to King City, he decided to pursue a lifelong dream of community and business development. So, along with his partner Jeff, they founded Alma Tierra LP. Tom continues to develop the Alma Tierra and SIGS Company businesses, and enjoys spending time with his family, golfing, exercise, and reading.

Jeff Hinderscheid is a dynamic and accomplished professional dedicated to helping students, parents, teachers, and families fight the mental health epidemic caused by screens and social media.

With a BA in Drama from UC Irvine and a Masters degree in Psychology with a specialization in Mental Health Administration, Jeff brings a unique and well-rounded perspective to students of all ages, families, and community leaders.

Throughout his 11 years with the Monterey County Department of Social Services, Jeff served in three departments and eventually rose to the role of a journey-level social worker V in child welfare. During that time he saw that each population had one thing in common: a decline in mental health due to social media and digital burn out.

As an avid arts enthusiast and performing artist, Jeff dedicated his life to sharing the arts with all populations throughout the community, as well as the psychological benefits that come from with it. Jeff started the children's musical theater program for Sol Treasures with Barbara Pekema, and continued to build a musical theater and stagecraft instruction program that now reaches to many K-12 schools throughout Monterey County. After leaving the county social worker career in 2021, he became the Executive Director of Sol Treasures, launching it into an automated and streamlined nonprofit that has grown to be one of the most renown arts organizations in Monterey County.

Jeff is a Psychology professor at Hartnell College, and as a skilled and dedicated professional instruction and training, Jeff is committed to making a positive impact in the lives of all students in his vision for a healthier society.

After growing the theater scene in South Monterey County through Sol Treasures, Jeff founded Center Stage Theatrical Productions, and launched Offline Xpression, a podcast dedicated to using the arts as a way of balancing mental health in the digital age.

His upcoming book launch, Be Both: From Blue Light to True Light, is a memoir-style self-help and self-acceptance manual that is designed to use all of Jeff's knowledge and experience to guide people to enlightenment through his three step A.C.T. method of regaining their lives from the torments of digital addiction and social media traps.

Jeff met Tom and finally was able to follow through on a vision that started in 2016: a beautiful large building that can be used for all community members and leave a lasting legacy in the history of South Monterey County.
